Alicia N. Perez

February 26, 1922 - March 19, 2015

Alicia N. Perez passed away in Del Rio, Texas, at the age of 93. She was born February 26, 1922 in Cd. Acuna, Coah. Mexico to Francisco Nuno and Elvira Ortiz Valdez Nuno. Preceding her in death were her husband Gustavo S. Perez, parents Francisco Nuno and Elvira Ortiz Valdez Nuno, brother Carlos Aguilar Valdez, and daughter Gloria P. Moreno. She is survived by her sons: Gustavo Alfonso (Poncho) Perez and wife Delia of San Bernardino, CA., Jose Luis (Pepe) Perez, Sr. and wife Rosalinda V., Carlos Perez and wife Velma both of Del Rio, TX., daughter Maria Alicia Johnson and husband James of Sylmar, CA., sister in law Maria Evelia Aguilar of Monterrey, NL. Mexico. Grandchildren Rudy Martinez, Jr., Cindy Arellano, Roberto Martinez, Ricardo Martinez, Gustavo Alfonso Perez Jr., Norman Perez, Michael Perez, Cindy Krattiger, Douglas Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Jose Luis (Joey) Perez, Jr., Steven Perez, Brian Perez, Melissa Perez, Charlie Perez, and Stephanie Perez; numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive. Alicia's life came from humble beginnings and this inspired her to work hard all of her life to always provide a better life for her family. She married Gustavo S. Perez on November 26, 1940 and started her family thereafter. During these early years, struggles were many and the family traveled north each year to work in the fields in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. She was always eager to share her life stories and spoke of how they endured the devastating flood of 1954 in Cd. Acuna. It was during this flood that the family lost most of their worldly possessions. After this set back, they began to make their life in Del Rio. She became employed by Mrs. Ellis, a kindergarten teacher, as a housekeeper and always credited her with teaching her how to cook American dishes. Later in life she was employed by Hicks Ponder for many years as a seamstress until her retirement in 1978. After her retirement, her days were filled with caring for her husband and mother. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren and she never said no to taking care of them on a moments notice. Two of her most memorable accomplishments in life were the day she was able to purchase her own home and the day she became a naturalized American citizen and was able to exercise her right to vote. Alicia will be missed by all of her family, but the stories she shared will continue in the family for generations to come. The family would like to thank Father Henry Clay Hunt, III, Dr. J. J. Gutierrez and the staff at Del Rio Nursing & Rehabilitation for the loving care and concern they provided our mother during her stay there. Special thanks to Brisa Rodriguez, Denise Braddy, Joann Rodriguez, Olivia Cardenas and administrator Carl Strange for their never ending patience in caring for her. Thanks also to Hospice of Val Verde Regional Medical Center, Bonnie Henderson, and Edna Rivera for the comfort and care they provided our mother in her final days. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to Friends of Hospice, P. O. Box 2301, Del Rio, TX 78841-2301. Cremation will be according to her wishes with a funeral mass scheduled for 10:00 am on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery. Funeral arrangements with G. W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home, of Del Rio LTD, 114 Fletcher Drive, Del Rio, Texas. 78840 Ph: 830.775.2000
