January 23, 1933 - December 31, 2021
Mary Lillie Turman Roberts, a devoted Christian and life time member of the Methodist Church,,passed away peacefully December 31st, 2021 due to a brain tumor. She was born January 23, 1933,in Sonora, Texas to Levi Bedford Turman and Mary Smith. She is preceded in death by her husband, James V Roberts, Jr., her two brothers Earl and James, her adopted grandnephew, Travis Downs, and her chosen children, Gary Hutto and Marsha Monroe. Mary was placed in the United Methodist Children’s Home in Waco at the age of ten and lived there until she graduated in 1951. She returned to live in Sonora with her uncle and aunt James and Lizzie Pharis. James Volney Robert Jr. (Junior) saw a picture of her in the home of his close friend in 1952 and though he had never met her, he told his friend, “I’m going to marry that girl!” Junior married her, June 6th, 1953 in Sonora, Texas. They moved into their newly built home in Del Rio in 1954. Mary and Junior both took a lot of pride and loving care of their home and Mary still lived in her home up to her passing. Junior was always so proud of her and up until his death in 2016 he continued to refer to her as his bride of 63 years. Mary is survived by her adopted nieces, Fonda Downs, husband Charlesand family; Wanda Macklin, husband Stan and family; her beloved cousins, Jackie Wallace and Family, Guy (Scooter) Martin and family; by her children of choice, Charlie, Bill and Vance Woods, their respective wives, Vicki, Laine and Jackie, and their families. She also leaves a huge circle of treasured friends throughout our community. All of whom she loved and touched deeply. Although she and her husband never had children of their own, they took many into their hearts and home. She once told her niece Fonda, that the Lord knew she had a mother’s heart and saw to it that she would have many “children” in her life. Her mother’s heart drew many to her. Mary worked at Laughlin AFB when she and her husband first moved to Del Rio in 1954, then worked at Sears for thirty-four ½ years. After Sears, she worked for Roberts Jewelers, and managed the Hallmark store in the mall for six years. In 1994, at the request of the Board of Directors for Val Verde Regional Medical Center Hospice, Mary set up and managed the Bargain Box from 1994 to 2015. In tribute to her dedication and the many volunteer hours she and her husband and the many volunteers gave to the program, July 28, 2007, was designated “Mary Roberts” day by the mayor of Del Rio for raising and contributing $500,000 to the citizens of Del Rio with the consequential enrichment of quality of life. In 2011 under the continued management of Mary, the Bargain Box reached a second milestone of $1 Million raised for Hospice. Mary leaves a great legacy of service to her community as she was very generous with her time and talents. She was well known for baking for all kinds of charitable events. She was especially thrilled when she raised $350 for one cake she baked for an auction. She truly treasured her family reunions and served the family well as the ‘most experienced’ member. She always told great family history stories to entertain us all.
